2 June 2020: Full Circle (So Long)

My last show for the semester. It’s been nice, and I’ll be back in the fall!

Set 1

“Obstacle 1” by Interpol

Probably my favorite Interpol song—a bit cliché, since it’s probably also their most popular, but whatever.

“Chased by… I Don’t Know What” by Snow Patrol

I wanted to play a song from this album (When It’s All Over We Still Have to Clear Up), and this is the one I was able to fit in. The album on the whole is pretty great if you like this.

“A Day Without Me” by U2

Bono wrote this about Ian Curtis’s death, which is also how you know this is from 1980.

“Michigan Hammers” by Protomartyr

Newest single from their upcoming album Ultimate Success Today.

“Everyone Choose Sides” by the Wrens

One of a few songs from The Meadowlands that the band wrote based on their experience with their previous record label. It’s a long-ish story, so you can read about it yourself, but let’s just say it was a bit bitter.

Set 2

“Gagging Order” by Radiohead

Just proof that Radiohead have some of the best B-sides of anyone.

“VCR” by the xx

This is the first song I heard by them, and probably still my favorite. I have a lot of positive memories associated with this one.

“War On War” on Wilco

I can’t even say this is a highlight from Yankee Hotel Foxtrot because the whole album is a highlight. This is one of the tracks I return to indiviually more often, though.

“Stupid” by the Long Winters

Not much to say about this one.

“Your Heart is An Empty Room” by Death Cab for Cutie

A bit of a deep cut from their major-label debut Plans. Definitely underrated within their body of work.

Closing

“Metal Detektor” by Spoon

If this isn’t my favorite song of theirs, it’s one of them. This is from their second album, A Series of Sneaks, which was from before they got famous and is really overlooked—no songs from it were included on the band’s greatest hits album, Everything Hits At Once. It’s a shame, because it’s a great album—not that what came after wasn’t just as good. Anyway, I had wanted to use this as a closing song for a while, so now I finally have.
